Creative Hub Old Library
Wrexham’s historic Grade II listed Old Library is being transformed into a vibrant Creative Hub, breathing new life into the city centre. This £4 million refurbishment will preserve the building’s cherished heritage features while introducing modern accessibility improvements, energy-efficient systems, and a striking contemporary glass extension housing a community café. Scheduled for completion in September 2025, the Hub will serve as a catalyst for Wrexham’s UK City of Culture 2029 bid, providing workspace for creative professionals and a dynamic venue that blends culture, technology and sustainability.
The Old Library Creative Hub represents a strategic investment in Wrexham’s creative economy, leveraging Welsh Government Transforming Towns funding to repurpose a disused civic asset. The scheme addresses multiple strategic objectives: enhancing the city’s cultural infrastructure (aligning with Placemaking Plan priorities), supporting Wales’ fastest-growing economic sector (creative industries generated £1.7bn turnover in 2021), and creating progression pathways for local talent through partnerships with Coleg Cambria and Wrexham University. The design by Lawray Architects carefully balances conservation requirements with contemporary interventions, including thermal performance upgrades targeting reduced operational costs and carbon emissions.
Residents will soon see exciting changes at the Old Library as Reads Construction begins phased works to create Wrexham’s new Creative Hub. While some temporary changes are necessary – including partial Guildhall car park use as a works compound and footpath closures for safety – the project team is minimising disruption. The transformed building will feature improved step-free access, conserved original features, and a light-filled new café space. This community-focused scheme will create opportunities for local creatives while giving everyone a stunning historic venue to enjoy, right in the heart of Queens Square.
